They and their families live in tents and are not separated from single male detainees.
Incidents of attempted suicide and self-harm are frequent as detainees are denied any information about when or even if their claims for asylum will begin to be processed.
The newly-appointed Immigration Minister Brendan O’Connor justifies this barbarism by the assumption that it will deter others from attempting dangerous sea voyages.
Members of Parliament who support this system should be deeply ashamed.
