Katriona Campbell was called four times last week by an overseas number before she answered another call and spoke to a man claiming to be from the ANZ Bank.
“I said I wasn’t interested but then he said, ‘I’ve got money to give back to you’,” she said.
“He had all this information about me – he knew my full name, my date of birth, my postal address...
“He then asked me if I wanted the money via cheque or straight into my account.
“I said cheque and then he said it was easier to put straight into my account and went on to read out the first four numbers of my account and wanted the last digits.
“I wouldn’t give them to him and that’s when he started to get really aggressive.
“I said if he was really who he said he was, a representative of the bank, he wouldn’t be talking to me in that manner and then he slammed down the phone in my ear.
“It was probably a 15-minute conversation and alarm bells started ringing.”
Ms Campbell said she rang ANZ to question the phone call and her fears about it being a scam were confirmed.
“I just don’t want anyone to fall for it,” she said.
