Huntly is under the jurisdiction of Goornong police station, which residents say cannot to respond to their needs, especially in an area with a growing population.

One resident reported to the Bendigo Advertiser that they were told by the Bendigo police to call the Axedale and Elmore police stations because the Goornong police station was closed.

“It’s like no one cares,” they said. 

“It’s only going to get worse. There are 800 new homes being built around here.”

Ms Allan wrote to Superintendent Clifton addressing the concerns of residents and asking for advice.

“I’ve received and understood members of the community’s concerns,” she said.

“Huntly and area between Epsom and Huntly is a growing community and there are lots of new houses being built.

“I understand the community are concerned about the amount of support and resources allocation to the area so that’s why on their behalf I raised it with the superintendent.”

Superintendent Clifton said the area was being adequately policed by both Goornong and Bendigo police stations, but  it was something Victoria Police and the state government would have to look at in the future.

“That area is being policed by Goornong but Bendigo units are quite often sent out there as well,” he said.

“Sometime in the near future we will have to look at policing that area because of the rapid growth.

“It’s not that far from Bendigo to Huntly, though. 

“It’s not the most rural place in the world.”
