Final year La Trobe University biotechnology and cell biology student Terri Field-Theodore, 20, was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society for Academics at the start of last year for being in the top 15 per cent of her class.
She was then nominated to go on the study trip to the United States, where she will visit the National Institute of Health in Washington and various universities across the country.
She will also visit HIV/AIDS facilities in Philadelphia, plus landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the National Museum.
Ms Field-Theodore said she hoped to gain a greater understanding of the American healthcare system. ?
