Man stabbed in early morning confrontation

A young man was stabbed in Melbourne's inner south early on Wednesday morning after a dispute with a man and a woman, police say.

The 22-year-old victim was sitting on a fence in Robe Street, near the corner of Grey Street, St Kilda and making a phone call but was confronted between 1.40am and 2am by a woman he did not know, a police spokeswoman said.

An argument began and the victim was then confronted by a man. A fight then broke out, the spokeswoman said.

The victim tried to walk away, but was approached from behind and slashed to the arm, neck and back.

He was treated at The Alfred hospital for cuts and was later released.

St Kilda Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident.

The man involved in the fight is described as white, aged in his 30s and having short, dark hair.
