Keen shoppers lined the streets early yesterday morning, with Myer Bendigo opening its doors at 7am.
Several traders were unsure how busy the day would be, but shoppers flocked to the CBD with many saying they were out to spend money and vouchers they had been given for Christmas.
The Boxing Day sales drew big crowds at Hargreaves Mall, Bendigo Marketplace and Lansell Square, with bargain hunters travelling into the city for one of the biggest shopping days of the year.
Rochester sisters Shelby and Taylor Marrone travelled to Bendigo to grab a bargain.
She said it was tradition to come down to Bendigo and shop on Boxing Day.
“It is always good to come and get a bargain,” Shelby said.
“The sales are always good.”
Five-year-old Peppa Edge was hoping to get a new toy.
Peppa’s mum Julie said she was on the hunt to find a great deal.
“Peppa loves unicorns and she found one, so we are very happy,” she said. Cory and Harry Arnett were also looking for a new toy, searching through the aisles at K-Mart. “I think I am going to buy some Lego,” Corey said.
Target Bendigo was also a popular shopping destination, with more than 60 people lining up to purchase their goods at any one time.
Consumer Affairs minister Michael O’Brien warned shoppers to know their refund and shopping rights before making a purchase.
He said sale items were covered by Australian consumer law in the same way as full-priced goods, with shoppers having the rights to a refund, repair or exchange in certain circumstances.
“Businesses cannot tell consumers they have no refund or other shopping rights simply because the item is on sale,” he said.
