LOCAL retailers are bracing for hectic scenes as Boxing Day sales kick off today.

But while some expect a rush of people through their doors, others are concerned their sales won’t be as strong as previous years.
Several store managers said the Christmas period had been slow, with customers probably waiting for today’s sales.
“We definitely think it will be a busy day,” Miss Jays owner Jodie Lewis said. “Everyone’s out for a bargain and I’m sure it will be big.”
Lansell Lotto and News co-owner Robyn Talbot said Lansell Square was always packed with families on Boxing Day.
“I think Boxing Day will be busy, but you just don’t know,” she said.
“Kmart and the big chains all have sales and people all come with their families to shop.”
Famous Footwear manager Emma Manley said people seemed to be waiting for post-Christmas sales this year.
Cos Cut Discount Cosmetics manager Karen Campbell said things had been slow and hoped people were saving for the sales.
Bendigo Business Council executive officer Patrick Falconer said Boxing Day sales were growing in popularity.
“I think it’s a real family day,” he said.
“A lot more people get gift cards now, which they will use at the Boxing Day sales and you get the tourist dollars coming in.
“I think shoppers these days are more astute.
“I think people have left it to the last minute so I think it’s going to be very busy.”
Lansell Square will open at 11am, Bendigo Marketplace at 10am and Strath Village IGA will open from 8am.
