“It is a bit unbelievable, you don’t think much about it until you reach it,” Mr Friswell said.
“I am slowing down a bit but I guess that is expected.”
Mr Friswell has lived in Bendigo his whole life, working odd jobs before he joined the airforce in 1943 as a pilot.
At the completion of his airforce duties he returned to Bendigo where he got a job as a engineer with the Victorian Inland Meat Authority and then at the Bendigo Hospital, before retiring at 65.
“After he retired we went caravanning around Australia,” said Mr Friswell’s wife Elva.
Mrs Friswell described her husband as a tremendous person and was very proud of his achievements.
“He has been a very good person all his life, he is a marvellous father and husband,” she said.
One of Mr Friswells’ fondest memories from growing up is when his brother and their friends built a small gilder.
“They said that they would like to put someone in it. I was nine at the time so they put me in it because I was the youngest and the lightest,” Mr Friswell said.
“I went up two times, it stalled on the third time and crashed, luckily I wasn’t in it.”
Mr Friswell has three children and 11 grandchildren and will enjoy celebrating with his family in February, when he and Elva visit their daughter, Joy, in Sydney.
When asked what the future holds, Mr Friswell said: “It is really hard to tell the future, you don’t know what is going to happen.”
