Sports Star judges face tough call 

DECIDING on a November winner/s in the Bendigo Advertiser-WIN Television Sports Star of the Year award will not be an easy task.

The judging panel for the bankmecu-sponsored awards will meet today at the Bendigo Advertiser.

November nominees include gallops trainer Shaun Dwyer, whose two-year-old Villa Verde won a 1000m classic on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington.

Later in the month, top jockey Brad Rawiller celebrated a third Ballarat Cup victory as he guided $41 shot King Diamond to win by a nose.

Golfing ace Lucas Herbert was selected in Australia’s junior squad for 2013.

Judo ace Shayann Stuart competed in the lightweight division at the Oceania Cup in Samoa.

Haylee Wellard won the 17-plus tumbling title at the Indo-Pacific trampolining titles in Sydney.

Trevor Watchman won the 100km road race for the 35-39 years division and Andrew Joiner the criterium in the same class at the Australian Veterans cycling titles near Launceston.

Danny Taggert has qualified for the senior elite 60kg final at the Victorian Amateur Boxing Championships, while Boedan Nelson won his junior lightweight contest in 40 seconds.

On the cricket field, Marong’s Scott Ross hit an Emu Valley Cricket Association record of 283 not out at Spring Gully.

The Dragon City Derby Dolls beat Ballarat to finish third in the western regional roller derby tournament.
