Bendigo highway patrol’s Sergeant Peter Beaman said police were still investigating what led to the crash in Prouses Road.
Sergeant Beaman said the 72-year-old Bendigo man was the sole occupant of the Mazda ute, which hit a tree in between Cohn and Bright streets about midday.
“A couple of passers by witnessed him veer off the road to the left and then hit the tree,” he said.
Sergeant Beaman said first aid was administered for 30 minutes, but the man died at the scene.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
