New figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, assessing wages from 2009-10, show Strathfieldsaye residents made $44,187 on average, closely followed by Maiden Gully residents, who made $44,160.
California Gully/Eaglehawk residents earned $37,253 on average, with Kangaroo Flat/Golden Square residents the second lowest at $37,861.
Bendigo Business Council executive officer Patrick Falconer said there could be several factors influencing the statistics.
“Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square cover a lot of acres and traditionally attract younger families who may not earn as much,” he said.
“There might be more young apprentices, that would bring the figures down.
“And places like Eaglehawk and California Gully traditionally have a manufacturing base where the salaries are generally a little lower.”
Mr Falconer said the new hospital project would push wages up. “There’s no doubt salaries will rise when the construction of the hospital starts,” he said.
Greater Bendigo’s 59,395 earners collectively made $2.4 billion, averaging out to $40,936 per person.
While East Bendigo/Kennington residents are ranked fourth for wages and salaries, they’re equal first with Strathfieldsaye for investment income at $7731 per person.
