I am hoping that some of your readers may be able to help me trace “Bendigo’s brave miners”. I would like to make contact with some of these brave miners’ descendants.

The Royal Humane Society and the Department of Mines had developed their own separate medals and certificates which they presented to the “bravery of rescuers”. With nearly 100 being presented to Bendigo’s brave.
Where are all these medals and certificates? The Bendigo Historical Society holds one, as does the Central Deborah Gold Mine and the Bendigo Fire Station with a couple more still held by families in Bendigo.
The top Australasian award for each year was the Clarke Gold Medal. Five Bendigonians have received this medal – Joseph Davies, James Marshall, William rogers, Marcus Stapleton and James Tonkin.
I am most interested in hearing from any of the descendants of these ‘“brave Bendigonians” that may still hold any of the medals and certificates issued to them.
Although other awards have been presented to Bendigonians for brave acts in other fields, I am at this time requiring any information of “brave miners” and their descendants. Please send any information to PO Box 259, Golden Square, 3555.
