Full job description

About our team

GrainCorp connects more than 10,000 grain growers with local and international customers via Australia’s largest silo network, with a storage capacity of over 20 million tonnes, seven bulk port elevators and two specialty port terminals. Innovation, integration and partnership are the foundations on which we are growing into our second century with customers at the heart of all that we do.

About the role

Grain handlers at our country grain receival sites are critical to ensuring that we service local grain growers and customers efficiently and safely in receiving, storing, maintaining and out-loading grain. The grains we handle include wheat, barley and canola mainly but we also take in chickpeas, sorghum and other commodities.

The core activities of a grain handler include:

  • Sampling grain received at the site (spearing using automatic or manual spears and then testing for protein, moisture and contaminants against specifications; entering data into our system)
  • Receiving sampled grain via truck at the weighbridge and entering weights into our system
  • Monitoring the flow of grain from truck unloading and onto hopper, auger or other equipment
  • Protecting and storing grain in bunkers or permanent silo storage (includes building, breaking-down and tarping bunkers)
  • Sweeping, shovelling, blowing down dust and other general housekeeping activities including site presentation
  • Operating equipment including augers, tractors, hoppers, loaders.

The type of work you undertake depends on the skills, experience, knowledge and tickets or licences you hold as well as the requirements of the site at which you’re based. These attributes also help determine the grade we might appoint you at under our enterprise agreement. The agreement will also set out any provisions available to you such as overtime and/or allowances.

We provide you with the uniform, training and certifications required to perform your job effectively and safely. We’re also proud to provide genuine opportunities for our people to take on more responsibility, allowing them to progress further, if desired.

About your experience

Our ideal candidate has experience in plant operations in any industry. You have a genuine passion for, or interest in, the grains and wider agricultural industry. A reliable and flexible approach to work is required, including the willingness to work outside of ordinary hours and on weekends where required.

Other things we'll look for:

  • Unrestricted driver or P2 provisional licence
  • Solid understanding / commitment to safe work practices
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Willing to learn and accept new challenges
  • Ability to relate well to others in a team setting
  • Basic literacy with computers and technology.

Though not essential, other licences, certifications and competencies that would be useful include H or M class truck licence, loader, skid-steer, first aid. In addition to providing proof of working rights and suitable professional referees, preferred candidates will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical.

Do you share our passion for contributing to the success of a diverse, international team?

At GrainCorp, we value and respect the different perspectives and experiences our people bring to work each day. We aim to increase the diversity of our workforce – leading to a range of different thinking, perspectives and ideas that create the innovation we need to drive better business results. We aim to have a work environment where everyone feels included and everyone can realise their full potential.
