RECOMMENDED FINDINGS FROM THE NSW INQUIRY INTO LGBTQI HATE CRIMES * Of the total of 22 unsolved deaths investigated by police strike force Parrabell, 14 were homicides * For six of the deaths there is objective reason to suspect that they were homicides * Of those 20 deaths, all were cases in which there is, objectively, reason to suspect that LGBTQI bias was a factor * Two deaths were not homicides PROPOSED INVESTIGATIVE PRACTICE RECOMMENDATIONS * Systematic and regular review of all unsolved homicide cases, including an audit of case exhibits * A review of the existing procedures and allocation of resources within the unsolved homicide team * Additional mandatory training for NSW Police concerning the LGBTQI community, to be developed with input from representatives TENSIONS BETWEEN POLICE AND THE INQUIRY * Delays in police production of documents * Underlying systemic problems with record-keeping known to senior officers before the inquiry began * Lack of reflection about negative or dismissive attitudes potentially still harboured towards LGBTQI people by police * Police public support for inquiry not reflected in its interactions with the commission Australian Associated Press
