Griffin cleared to play for Spirit

Bendigo Spirit US forward Kelsey Griffin has been cleared to play her first WNBL match this coming weekend.

Griffin will suit up for Friday night’s clash with the Flames in Sydney, before the Spirit back-up on Sunday in a rematch against the Canberra Capitals in Albury.

The Spirit had been waiting anxiously for the visa approval before last weekend – but it couldn’t be finalised with the immigration department and Basketball Australia in time.

25 year old Griffin was a standout player at the University of Nebraska before being selected as the third pick of the 2010 WNBA draft.  Griffin has played three seasons for Connecticut in the WNBA, as well as seasons in Hungary and Israel.

Head Coach Bernie Harrower said while it was frustrating not to have Kelsey cleared to play in the Spirit’s five point loss to Canberra on the weekend, he was looking forward to having a full squad at his disposal for the upcoming road double header.

“Kelsey has fitted into the group perfectly and she’s been a dominant player at training for the past couple of weeks.  I think she’ll have a great impact for us at both ends of the floor.”
