More than 2500 children were surveyed and given the option of three designs, two of which incorporated dragons.
Overwhelmingly the "big red dragon" was favoured by preschool and prep aged children with the "house and boat" design coming in second and the "land and sky" concept third.
The three designs catered for children aged up to six and featured jumping areas, moveable parts, slides and climbing areas.
The playgrounds have been designed to withstand heavy usage and some sections will be interchangeable with future play spaces.
City of Greater Bendigo mayor Lisa Ruffell said it was important everyone had a say in the play space design.
“All designs had great merit and were able to be constructed in the Mall but the ‘big red dragon’ is the clear winner in children’s eyes,” said Cr Ruffell.
“I want to thank all the preschools and schools who have been fantastic in their support for this process.
“We will be seeking further feedback from our community to determine the name of the latest addition to our city and this time we might let big people have a say too.”
The concepts were sent to 80 schools in the Bendigo region with 64 responding.
Councillors will consider the play space recommendation at Wednesday's meeting.
