It should be incredibly galling to ratepayers to read Bendigo Stadium CEO Eric Pascoe’s casual assertion that local government “would have to provide” any portion of the millions of dollars required to fund construction of the new sporting facilities demanded by VCAT to justify its approval of the 30 extra poker machines specifically designed to financially exploit vulnerable Bendigonians, (Bendigo Advertiser, November 9).

Mr Pascoe’s comment fundamentally exposes the myth of the social conscience of pokies-dependent sports clubs.
Our only consolation can be council planning and development director Prue Mansfield’s statement that the council is “obviously very disappointed” by the VCAT ruling, indicating that the CoGB council will continue to oppose the social scourge of the pokies here in Bendigo.
