Bendigo Spirit star Tess Madgen has been selected for the 2011 World University Games in August.Madgen, who studies at the University of South Australia, is one of 12 players selected for the basketball team, which will compete in China from August 12 to 23.Heading up the Australian line-up are Opals squad members Marianna Tolo, Elyse Penaluna and Abby Bishop, as well as top WNBL players Rachel Jarry and Cayla Francis and US College player Louella Tomlinson. The team will also hold a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from July 3 to 7, where it will play against the Japan women’s team before departing for China.Madgen, who has already re-signed with Bendigo for the 2011-12 WNBL season, was a standout for the Spirit in ’10-11, winning the Spirit’s MVP award.Madgen averaged 15.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season and shot at 37 per cent from distance.Spirit coach Bernie Harrower said Madgen’s selection was reward for her hard work.“Tess has always been a player that has done whatever is necessary to find success,” he said.“When you look at her work ethic and talent level, her selection should really come as no surprise.“It’s exciting to have one of Bendigo’s up-and-coming stars get the chance to represent Australia and we wish her and the rest of the team the best of luck in China.”
