Master athletes US-bound

SEVEN members from Eaglehawk YMCA Athletics Club will be bound for the US this weekend to contest the World Masters athletics championships.The Hawks will be represented by Kathryn Heagney, Michelle Stevenson, Terry Hicks, Annette and Geoff Major, Bill and Heather Carr in runs or walks on the Sacramento track and roads.Warming up to compete in the 60-64 years class, Heagney will leave for the States today.Events at her sixth World Masters appearance will be 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m.The 400m is Heagney’s strongest event.A great summer on the Victorian Athletics League circuit included winning a 400m final at Euroa, being runner-up in four 800m classics, and third in an 800m hit-out at Stawell.Stevenson will compete at the World Masters for the first time.Her campaign for the 40-44 years class includes the 8km cross-country, 400m hurdles, 800m and 1500m.The mother of six has put in great runs on this winter’s Athletics Victoria cross-country circuit. Stevenson is fourth in the 40-plus women’s aggregate.As well as putting in many hours training, Stevenson has also gained sponsorship from RetireInvest, Bendigo Bank, Bendigo Property Management and Allara Motor Inn.Hicks will race the 55-59 years 400m and 800m, with Annette Major to line up in the 45-49 years 5km walk, 10km walk and 20km walk.Geoff Major competed at World Masters aths titles in Finland and Italy. Events in the US will be the 5km, 10km and 20km walks for the 75-79 years class.Formerly of Maldon, Bill and Heather Carr will be strong contenders for medals in the 60-64 division.Heather will contest the 5km, 10km and 20km walks, with Bill to race the 100m, 200m and 400m. The fortnight-long titles start next Wednesday.
