EPSOM produced the upset of the season when it defeated Eaglehawk 3-1 in the FFV Central women’s competition on Sunday. The big winner was Moama, which leapfrogged Eaglehawk on the ladder to take top position. In cold and windy conditions at Truscott Park, Epsom took its chances against Eaglehawk. The Scorpions goalkeeper was in fine form all match, allowing her side to hurt Eaglehawk on the counter-attack. Jo Hill broke the deadlock before half-time to give her side a 1-0 lead at the break. The home side came out firing in the second half and their effort was rewarded when Tegan Raeburn found the net to equalise. Not to be denied, the Scorpions upped the ante to put the result beyond doubt through goals from Rebecca Adams and Jacinta Morrissey.Best for Epsom were Hill, Morrissey and Anthea Nicholson, while Anna Geary, Amy Skvarc and Paige Condor were the standouts for Eaglehawk. At Moama, the Border Raiders surged to top spot with a 7-0 win against Strathdale. Goals were shared between Zoe Dannatt, Alannah Richardson, Erin Teasdale (all two) and Cassandra Powell. With a cosy run home, the Border Raiders could now have top spot sewn up.Their hardest match will be against Castlemaine on July 24 after the two sides drew 2-2 in round six.Should they win their remaining four matches, Moama will finish the season as champions.Castlemaine can still mathematically take top spot, although it would need other results to go its way.The Maine did their chances no harm on Sunday when they put Swan Hill to the sword 3-1.The home side scored first through Heidi Kelly after five minutes, but it was all Castlemaine after that.Lyn West equalised for the visitors at the 35-minute mark, before Theabella Cooke gave the Chewton-based side the lead just before half-time.Swan Hill held firm after the break, but was unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard.West scored again before full-time to put the result beyond doubt.Spring Gully rebounded strongly from its 7-1 loss to Moama to defeat Colts United 2-0. Both goals were scored in the first half, with Carrie Leneghan making the most of a short corner and Ally Van Dalen finding a way past the goalkeeper in open play. The Reds could have won by more, though, with a number of opportunities wasted.Best for Spring Gully was fill-in goalkeeper Jess Hartland, with sweeper Shania Cromb and defender Ebony Trewhella solid in the back half. For Colts, Alishia Stratford played well, as did Sally Brown.
