Moama is shaping up to be a real contender in this year’s FFV Central women’s division after drawing 1-1 with reigning champions Eaglehawk on Sunday.Moama, which took out the pre-season Lightning Cup, started the match in fine form, with Alannah Richardson scoring in the opening minute. The Border Raiders continued to play quality attacking football until their momentum was cut by a knee injury to Milly Denson, which sidelined her for the remainder of the match. The break in the match gave Eaglehawk the chance to regroup, with the Borough stepping up its attack. That resulted in Charlie Cowland scoring the equaliser late in the opening half.Excellent defence from both teams after the break meant neither side could break the deadlock, despite attacking play at both ends.Border Raiders captain Cassie Powell was excellent in the midfield for the home team, while keeper Kari Gulson was at her best.At Chewton, Castlemaine started its season in fine form, delivering a 4-2 win over Spring Gully. After a closely contested first half which saw scores tied at 1-1 at the break, Castlemaine burst out of the blocks to score three goals and take the match.Castlemaine’s goalkeepers Iona Moller was strong in front of goal, while Lauren Gowty’s return to the senior team was encouraging for the season ahead.Castlemaine striker Bridget Wood was a standout with two goals. For Spring Gully, Ally van Dalen was solid in defence and Jade DeMarchi led the midfield for the match, while Grace Edlin played her role up forward. At Shadforth Park, Golden City was gallant in defeat, losing 3-1 to Strathdale.City was only able to field a team of nine against a young and enthusiastic Strathdale women’s side.Despite being undermanned, Golden City was strong in defence in the first half, only allowing one goal to Ange Foley. The second half saw Strath make the most of their numerical advantage, with the Luatutu sisters both scoring. In the final game of the round, Colts United stamped its authority on the competition with a 7-0 win against Swan Hill.
