Blue-green algae threat to Bendigo lakes

High levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae have been detected in Kennington Reservoir and Lake Tom Thumb.City of Greater Bendigo manager of environmental health and local laws Susannah Milne said residents should avoid contact with the water at both lakes.Ms Milne also said a lack of inflow and continuing warm temperatures had created ideal conditions for algal blooms.“People should obey the warning signs that are located at various points around both lakes and not swim or wade whilst the blooms are occurring.”“Dogs and other domestic animals should be stopped from entering the water,” she said.Boating, fishing, sightseeing and other activities that do not involve direct water contact can still be enjoyed at the lakes. However care should be exercised when near the water and people who come into contact with the affected water should wash their skin immediately in clean water.Ms Milne said the City of Greater Bendigo would continue to monitor the situation closely.
