IN NEED: Costly car repairs have left the O’Connell family Cheri, Tara, 5, and David struggling to leave home.

EVERY day Tara O’Connell has 80 to 100 seizures.Just five years old, she’s got Dravet Syndrome, a life-threatening and “catastrophic” form of epilepsy. And while most seizures aren’t serious, between five and 10 a day render her unconscious. Her mum Cheri said Tara could walk and run, but after the more serious seizures she regressed for hours at a time.“She can go back to being like a baby for two or three hours,” she said. The condition means Tara needs a wheelchair when leaving the house, in case she has a seizure. But for at least the next two months Mrs O’Connell and Tara are virtually housebound after their car, which has a wheelchair lift, was taken in for repairs. The transmission on their Tarago needs to be replaced and Mrs O’Connell said the repairs were likely to cost up to $3500.The family is desperately saving every penny but said it would be months before they had enough, and they’re worried about what Tara will miss out on during that time.“We are desperate to get this car back on the road quickly so that Tara, who is also autistic and has dysphragia, can do all the things everyone else takes for granted,” Mrs O’Connell said.Without the car they have no other option.Public transport to their Mia Mia home is non-existent and a taxi is unaffordable. At $40 one way to Heathcote, Mrs O’Connell said she didn’t even want to ask what it would cost to get to Bendigo. The other problem is a lack of wheelchair lift taxis in the region.“They’re almost non-existent. Disability access taxis just don’t exist,” she said.“Heathcote doesn’t have one, and even though there’s one in Kyneton they charge a $20 callout fee before they even get here because we live so far from town.”
