Footballers rewarded with all-star selection

FOOTBALL Federation Victoria Central championship and best and fairest winners were recognised at the annual presentation dinner held at MacGillvray Hall on Friday night.Strathdale took out the division one championship, while Eaglehawk was victorious in both the division two and women’s divisions. Epsom was named champions in the youth division and the 2010 youth league cup.The James Anderson Medal, for the division one best and fairest, was awarded to Eaglehawk midfielder Shane Eleveld, while the Barry Moore Trophy for the division two was awarded to the Hawks’ Mick McKecknie.The Loris Browning Medal for the women’s best and fairest was awarded to Epsom’s Emma Wolters.The youth best and fairest, the Mel McGovern Medal, was shared by Strathdale young gun James Crawley and Eaglehawk’s Daniel Kelly. Crawley also took out the youth division goal-scoring award.Moama forward Bryn Barnes-Webb was awarded the John Webb Trophy by Richard Webb for the male young player of the year and also took out the division one goal-scoring award over Strathdale’s Fergus Rawluk.Epsom’s Marni Grabasch was named female young player of the year, while the women’s goal-scoring award went to Eaglehawk’s Maika Ruyter-Hooley. Epsom’s Sam Kerrins took out the division two goal-kicking award.Bendigo Vipers forward Sarah Richardson was presented with the annual chairman’s award for winning the women’s premier league best and fairest award for the 2010 season.The Berry family was presented with the newly created family award for their hard work and involvement in the local competition as players, committee members and referees.The FFV central all-star team was also unveiled, with Strathdale coach Neal Phillips named as coach for the second consecutive year.Five Strathdale players were named in the team – goalkeeper Jack Gwynn, defender Nic Watson, midfielders Nathan Sartori and Aaron Mertens and striker Fergus Rawluk. League top goal-scorer Barnes-Webb was named as a forward, alongside teammate Seb Hargreaves who was included in the midfield.League best and fairest Eleveld was selected in the midfield, while teammate Chris Hopley was selected in the backline.Capping off the starting 11 was Golden City veteran Steve Graham in sweeper and Spring Gully’s Josh Naunton on the right-wing.Epsom’s Liam Jukes, Sam Mackenzie and Jake Allport, Spring Gully’s Matt Ford and Swan Hill’s Ben Mitchell were named as interchange players.Phillips said he was thrilled to be named as all-star coach for the second consecutive year.“It was really good to get it two years in a row,” he said.“It was good to have it again after coaching a team that stayed on top for both seasons.”Phillips said it was good to see some new challengers in the division one competition, with the likes of Moama and Epsom stepping up this season. “The challengers this season were the younger sides like Moama and Epsom, whereas in the past the main competiton has been Eaglehawk and Colts.”“It’s a more even competition than it ever has been.”Tom Cybula was named the division one all-star team referee.The women’s all-star team was dominated by Eaglehawk and Epsom players, with the two clubs making up 10 of the starting 11.The women’s all-star team: Goalkeeper: L.
