The pig pavilion at the Bendigo Show may not be everyone’s idea of exotic, but these are no ordinary trotters.The Bendigo Show is the only place you’ll see all of the world’s eight remaining breeds of pig – some of them rarer than the Orangutan.Huntly pig breeders Katy Brown and Craig Beaumont have set out save some of the oldest, rarest bloodlines in the world.“I know some of our piglets have literally the last genetics left ,” Katy said. “Everybody knows about the orangutans, the pandas and tigers. I’ve got pigs at home that are rarer than them.“But not many people are passionate about pigs because they’re not cute. “I don’t know, maybe people just don’t care about animals disappearing.“Around the world three farm animals disappear a month.”Bendigo Advertiser photographer Brendan McCarthy managed to capture the pigs’ cute and cuddly side this week, as Lauren Mitchell set out to discover an amazing story of tenacity and survival.Read all about it in Saturday's More Weekend.
