CAMELS returned to the Mia Mia Oval on Saturday to take part in the 150th anniversary of the Burke and Wills expedition setting up Camp 6 in Mia Mia in 1860.The event, organised by the Mia Mia Burke and Wills Committee, attracted more than 500 people. As well as a host of activities at the oval, a Burke and Wills-themed art show was held at the Mia Mia Hall.In 1860 Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills set off on an adventure, organised by Royal Society of Victoria, with the aim of becoming the first to cross Australia through its vast interior, from Melbourne in the south to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the north. Committee chairwoman Wendy Hulls said camels played a significant role in the expedition, so she was delighted to have camels at the event. “One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, the Burke and Wills expedition set up Camp 6 at ‘The Flat’, now known as Mia Mia Oval. “When we started thinking about how to commemorate this 150th anniversary, we decided that we would invite the community to activities that were close to what Burke and Wills experienced.’’ Saturday’s event included free camel rides, traditional campfire activities, damper making and marshmallow toasting.Local honey, olives and wine was also available.
