BENDIGO Bank Bombers coach Shannon Grant was locked up in the Bendigo police station cells at the weekend after being arrested for drunkenness.Grant was arrested at 4.15am yesterday morning outside the Shamrock Hotel.“A 33-year-old man was picked up for being drunk about 4.15am in Williamson Street,” a police spokesman told the Bendigo Advertiser last night.“He was intoxicated and taken to the Bendigo police station and subsequently charged with being drunk and bailed.”Grant spent four hours in the cells sobering up.Bombers chairman David Joss confirmed Grant had been locked up by Bendigo police.“I can certainly confirm that it has happened, and obviously, it’s unacceptable when your coach is involved in something like this,” Joss said. “We’re investigating it and hopefully, by tomorrow, we will be able to make some sort of announcement on a course of action.“I know he was picked up for drunk and disorderly outside the Shamrock Hotel, but to my understanding he hasn’t been violent or abusive or anything like that.“I don’t think there’s a lot behind it, but at the same time, it’s unacceptable if your senior coach is pulled up for drunk and disorderly.“Shannon is very disappointed in his actions, and we’re very disappointed in him as well, but at the end of the day, we, along with Essendon, will work through this together.”The Bombers had a general bye in the VFL at the weekend, but Grant was in Bendigo to watch the Bendigo Football League’s inter-league game against Gippsland at the Queen Elizabeth Oval on Saturday.Grant is in his first season as coach of Bendigo’s VFL team. After the Bombers failed to win any games last year and finished on the bottom, Grant, 33, has led the team to five victories in its first six games. Before taking over as coach of the Bombers, Grant was a star of the AFL, playing 301 games for Sydney and North Melbourne between 1995 and 2008 after debuting as a 17-year-old.He played in North Melbourne’s 1999 grand final win over Carlton, winning the Norm Smith Medal as best on ground.Grant could not be contacted last night. The Bombers this Sunday return to the QEO to play the Casey Scorpions in round seven of the VFL in a crucial clash between third and fourth on the ladder.
