From original-style barbed wire to trophies, football boots and carved emu eggs, residents donated a huge variety of sentimental items which were encased in clear resin by Bendigo artist Carl Rolfe.

The sculpture, which stands outside the Wycheproof Post Office, is made of seven columns forming a waterless fountain, symbolising the drought-affected region.

Other items featured in the sculpture, which will tell the story of Wycheproof to generations to come, include antique brass hose fittings donated by the fire brigade, farm machinery and local schoolchildren's artwork.

Mr Rolfe said creating the sculpture was a very different project, as most artists usually work in isolation.

He said the sculpture was a real group effort, with all the community discussing and donating items.

"You're definitely trying to keep everyone involved and excited and that is good," he said.

Ellen White, from the Wycheproof Community Resource Centre, said locals would love the sculpture as a rural community proud of its history.

Community members were each given a special booklet which commemorated the event and listed the donated items.
