V/LINE will be completing track resurfacing works on the Bendigo line this weekend after investigations identified a number of mud holes under some sections of the track.

Coaches will be replacing the 10.25pm Southern Cross to Bendigo service on Sunday, September 1, along with the 10.52pm and 11.52pm Southern Cross to Bendigo services on Monday, September 2.

"V/Line is completing works this Sunday and Monday night to even out the track surface and create a smoother ride for passengers along the Bendigo line," a V/Line spokesperson said.

"We're completing the works at night, which allows us to improve the track condition while minimising the impact to passengers."

High rain totals throughout winter have created a number of mud holes under sections of the track surface.

There have been temporary speed restrictions at specific parts of the line where mud holes were identified.

A NUMBER of V/Line services will travel at a slower speed from next Wednesday in order to reduce wear and tear on the trains and tracks.

V/Line confirmed from September 4 some trains travelling on the Bendigo Line between Kyneton and Sunbury will have their speed reduced from 130 kilometres per hour to 115 kilometres per hour.

There will be no changes to the sections of track where the speed is set at 160 kilometres per hour.

"Minor speed changes are a normal part of running a railway and ensure we keep trains running reliably and safely," a V/Line spokesperson said.

"We anticipate the changes will affect a small number of off peak services and we're taking steps to minimise any impact to passengers.

"V/Line's VLocity trains will continue to run at a top speed of 160 kilometres per hour between Melbourne and Bendigo, which is the fastest speed passenger trains currently run in Australia."

The changes will only have an impact on trains travelling on the East Line of the track, which is used for counter-peak services. V/Line said it was anticipating no cancellations as a result of the changes.

The Swan Hill and Echuca services would also be unaffected.

But Victorian Shadow Minister for Public Transport Infrastructure David Davis said the speed changes showed the incompetence of the state government.

"In the country and the city, regular maintenance money has been torn out and redirected to large city-based infrastructure projects, level crossings, and the metro rail tunnel that is running massively over budget," Mr Davis said.

"That will directly result in the slow downs and cuts to services. Commuters will feel the pain of slower services and less reliable services because of Labor's mismanagement.

"The blunders of Ms (Jacinta) Allan as transport minister and now transport infrastructure minister are now coming home to roost. Her own community is going to be hit hard because of her incompetence."

Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne said the government would continue to support V/Line.

"We've invested a record amount of money into V/Line - in contrast to the Coalition who cut $120 million from V/Line's budget," Ms Horne said.

A government spokesperson on Thursday said the speed changes were "a matter for V/Line - who have assured government they are taking steps to minimise potential impacts to passengers".
