Todd Newman Builders has taken out three categories at the Housing Industry Association’s regional housing awards for a Barkly Street project.
It might have been a four bedroom house, but Mr Newman said demolishing the original building, easement and service alterations and the high-end, open plan build threw up its fair share of challenges.
“We were working on a 68 metre-long by 12 meter-wide allotment,” he said.
“It was very challenging because there was very limited access to the site, especially when it came to the big concrete pours.
“The ground conditions were extremely challenging in terms of alteration of sewage lines and what have you. We were down three metres deep with piers in that area too,” Mr Newman said.
Yet it is the finished product that the award judges responded to, lauding the build team for its work on black concrete floors with white aggregate and extensive window walls providing abundant natural light.
HIA’s Victorian regional director Fiona Nield said the home was “simply stunning” and that the team had delivered a home both they and their clients were justifiably proud of.

Mr Newman and his wife Kate thanked their team, in particular Glenn Hamilton and Jake Marwood, as well as architect Lucas Hodgens.
They also thanked their clients Ros and John, saying the relationship with them and the standard of the build were the two most rewarding aspects of the project.
“It does take your breath away every time you walk in,” Mr Newman said.
Builders and subcontractors took on ultra-modern techniques to complete the project.
The Barkly Street build is now a finalist in the custom built home category of the 2018 HIA CSR Victoria Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards.
