But Mr Wood did not want anything for himself, so it was agreed Mrs Glare would instead raise money for children’s cancer charity Camp Quality.
In the first two years of her fundraising efforts, Mrs Glare raised more than $3900 through a step-counting initiative called ‘Steptober’ and sausage sizzles.
But this year, she has ramped her efforts up as she attempts to raise at least $10,000 for Camp Quality: the Sunbury resident is walking 138 kilometres from Bendigo to Sunbury within 24 hours, and expects to arrive at the latter location tomorrow afternoon.
She told the Bendigo Advertiser she decided to switch up her fundraising events in an effort to spread awareness of Camp Quality and its work.
The charity works with children affected by cancer, offering support and therapy programs, as well as trips away and family fun days.
Mrs Glare embarked on the ‘Russ Wood Walk’ about 5am Friday and will walk through the day, stopping overnight before planning to set off again at 7am on Saturday morning.
The first morning of walking was “absolutely magnificent,” she said.
She said she aimed to walk at least 7 kilometres an hour and was keeping pace well by lunchtime Friday, having put herself half an hour ahead of schedule by 1.15pm.
Mrs Glare trained for the past three months for the long walk, doing plenty of walking to get herself ready.
She donated a day’s wage to Camp Quality and by early Friday afternoon, had raised just shy of $8000 from supporters of her efforts.
