While it could easily be argued that every day is an appropriate day to celebrate our furry friends, it is today, Friday March 23, that officially marks International Puppy Day.
But while the occasion certainly provides plenty of opportunity to gush over the adorable faces of young pooches, it also has a more meaningful function.
The day was established in the US in 2006 as a way to promote puppy adoption from shelters and animal rescue organisations.
It also intends to draw attention to the cruel practices that can occur in dog breeding, such as puppy farms and irresponsible backyard breeders.
