Bendigo has become the first Australian city to be recognised as a bicycle-friendly community by a renowned bike tourism organisation, the council says.

The city was recently given a silver accreditation by CycleLifeHQ in recognition of its community engagement and bicycle education.
The council’s regional sustainable development manager Trevor Budge said the recognition was good for Bendigo.
“The city has worked hard in recent years through the development of the Connecting Greater Bendigo: Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy (ITLUS), creating shared walking and cycling paths and providing bike parking facilities,” he said.
CycleLifeHQ global operations manager Anna Gurnhill said the accreditation helped towns and cities benchmark themselves and track their progress, while encouraging more locals to ride bikes, and also to attract more cycle tourists.
Bendigo will host two cycling conferences in 2018, the Australian Walking and Cycling Conference and the Bicycle Tourism Conference.
