He was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries following the crash, which claimed the life of another man.
Police are yet to determine the cause of the crash.
UPDATE 9.15am: This morning’s fatal crash at Bonn, near Rochester, brings the road toll for the year to date to 40.
Three more people have lost their lives on Victoria’s roads this year compared with this time last year.
Police said the man who died at the scene had yet to be identified.
A second man has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police believe a Toyota Landcruiser and a Holden Statesman sedan collided head-on on Heathcote-Rochester Road just after 6.45am.
They have urged anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
UPDATE 8.42am: One man has died and another is in a serious condition following a head-on collision near Rochester on Tuesday morning.
State Emergency Service crews worked for about an hour to free a man trapped in a utility vehicle.
One man is being flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne via Air Ambulance.
The other man died at the scene.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will assess the scene this morning.
Heathcote-Rochester Road is closed at the intersection of Kyabram-Rochester Road and the Midland Highway.
VicRoads has advised motorists to delay their travel or seek an alternative route.
EARLIER: Emergency services are at the scene of a road incident near Rochester.
The incident occurred on the Heathcote-Rochester Road around 6.40am on Tuesday.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics are attending the scene.
