Cr Gardner won a by-election to fill an extraordinary vacancy that arose after the resignation of Sharon Telford.
Cr Gardner was one of three candidates standing for position. He thanked his family for their role throughout the election process.
“Thanks to the support of my wife, Kylie, and my father-in-law, Stuart, who did a great job of spruiking me to everyone in the street,” Cr Gardner said.
“I’m looking forward to filling the vacancy and working with everyone in the community and at council.”
He will represent the Tarrengower ward on the Mount Alexander Shire Council until the next general council election in October, 2020.
There is one councillor in the Tarrengower ward, elected under the proportional system of voting.
Victorian Electoral Commission returning officer Dean Curtis declared the result on Friday at council chambers.
Mayor Bronwen Machin said councillors and staff were very happy to have Cr Gardner on board.
“It’s great for Maldon, Baringhup and surrounds to once again have their own representative on Council,” she said.
Following Ms Telford’s resignation, Tony Bell also resigned as councillor.
Dave Petrusma was named as Mr Bell’s replacement remains after a second on the recount. Chris Cole won the first recount but declined the position.
Mount Alexander Shire councillor Robin Taylor also resigned on February 14, making him the third councillor to do so in four months.
A countback to replace Mr Taylor in the Castlemaine ward will be held on Monday, March 5. The process is conducted by the VEC.
