Both occupants of the vehicle escaped unhurt.
A 17-year-old male learner driver was attempting to turn right into Chapel Street from McCrae Street when he failed to give way, colliding with the side of the four-wheel-drive which was heading south on McCrae Street at the time.
The four-wheel-drive crashed through fencing and ended up on its side about 11am.
The learner driver’s car sustained extensive damage to its front.
All vehicles were towed from the scene and traffic was restricted for more than an hour. All occupants were also out of the vehicles when emergency services arrived.
Leading Senior Constable Steve Bice said the crash created a number of traffic issues for people heading through central Bendigo.
“It’s fairly chaotic, the church had a service on at the time so the traffic flow in the area was pretty high so it’s caused disruption for about an hour,” he said.
”A penalty notice will be issued to the driver who failed to give way.”
Powercor attended the scene to repair a street light that was damaged in the crash.
Landscaping works at the front of the new TAFE building sustained minor damage.
