Wayne Bevans had just parked on Park Road with his two children when he spotted the tree collapse out the corner of his eye just after 6pm.
It missed his car by two metres.
“It fell right on the path, we were very fortunate that we hadn’t left the car yet,” Mr Bevans said.
“There was a gentleman walking about 30 metres away. If he had have been there, he would have copped it.
“It was a pretty big tree, the branches were about six or seven inches in diameter.”
Power poles and the cast iron bridge across the Bendigo Creek propped the tree up before CFA and SES crews arrived.
Mr Bevans said the base of the tree appeared to be rotten and the wind was relatively mild at the time.
The region has experienced strong winds this weekend. Winds have peaked at 33 km/h in Bendigo this morning, and reached 52 km/h in Redesdale.
