A coffee station irreverently situated in the middle of the pristine gallery space has confounded visitors to La Trobe Art Institute over the past few weeks. Melbourne-based artist Shannon Lyons invites visitors to participate in the exhibition by making themselves a cup of coffee that they may then enjoy as they peruse the other artworks. The playfully titled installation, Instant Gratification allows visitors to indulge in an activity usually forbidden in the gallery and draws attention to one of the more banal, commercial activities essential to the institute’s operation.
Lyons is developing a strong reputation for her site-responsive installations, gestures and interventions that critically examine the sites they are produced in.
