BENDIGO riders have made a flying start to the 2018 Junior Track National Championships in Melbourne.
A sparkling day one performance was headed by Alessia McCaig, who won gold in the under-17 women’s 500m time trial.
The 14-year-old, who is one of seven Bendigo and District Cycling Club riders in the 20-member Victorian team, backed it up with gold with Victoria’s under-17 women’s pursuit team, alongside Brunswick Cycling Club trio Keely Bennett, Hayley Jenkins and Kobi Merchant.
The gold medal haul continued with Patrick Eddy and Blake Agnoletto joining Henry Dietze (Brunswick) and Max Leiner (Carnegie) to win the under-17 men’s team pursuit.
In doing so, the Victorian quartet established a new Australian record.
One of the youngest members of the state team, Ruby McLean claimed a bronze medal in the under-15 women’s sprints.
McCaig’s dual win continued an impressive few months for the teenager following a strong national Junior Track Series and a win in the Junior Women’s Austral Wheelrace in December.
The championships continue until February 24 at the Darebin International Sports Centre Velodrome.
Bendigo and District Cycling is being represented by Blake Agnoletto, Alex Allott, Patrick Eddy (men’s under-17), Alessia McCaig (women’s under-17), Jacob Henery (men’s under-15), Jasmine Eddy and Ruby McLean (women’s under-15).
