Forty ambassadors from government, Catholic and independent secondary schools in Bendigo have been selected to champion technology amongst their peers and college communities.
The role will also see the students partake in a series of workshops and events.
Designing a sturdy bridge was among the challenges in which the ambassadors participated during their first workshop, earlier this month.
Building materials included raw spaghetti and marshmallows.
The room was abuzz as the bridges were put to the test, using juice boxes as traffic.
Organisers said the young ambassadors’ insights would shape the school’s programming, values, design and building fit-out.
Community Leadership Loddon Murray and and Steelcase, an international design company, facilitated the two-day ‘bootcamp’ at La Trobe University Bendigo campus.
CLLM chief executive Leah Sertori said young facilitators would play a leading role in the workshops and events.
Bendigo 2017 Young Citizen of the Year Khayshie Tilak Ramesh and 2017 Australian Science Olympiads gold medalist Alex O’Shea were among the young CLLM STEAM facilitators at the first session.
“Our partnership with the Tech School enables students to learn from leaders who are of similar age with shared passions,” Ms Sertori said.
STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Bendigo Tech School director Graeme Wiggins said the initial workshop generated many ideas for how students would like to be involved in the Tech School, which will be based at the university campus.
An interest in technology motivated Cooper Miller-Govett, of Crusoe College, to apply to become an ambassador.
He was hopeful the Tech School would enhance the STEAM programs offered by the region’s secondary colleges.
Girton Grammar School student Arunika Madina believed the Tech School would bring all the schools in Bendigo together.
Fourteen secondary colleges will have access to the Tech School, which is scheduled for completion mid-year.
