CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria attended the fire in the Spring Gully Creek Reserve, near the soccer fields, shortly before 5pm.
Emergency services were alerted when the smoke was spotted from the One Tree Hill fire tower.
It took crews about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, with a firefighting helicopter assisting in the effort.
FFM Victoria senior fire management officer Jeff Wilkie said the fire burnt an area about one-quarter of a hectare in size.
With no lightning and it being an area frequented often by the public, Mr Wilkie said the cause of the fire was being treated as suspicious, although misadventure was also a possibility.
Mr Wilkie said it was lucky it was a milder day, as in hotter, windier weather, the fire could have had the potential to cause more damage in the residential area.
With the weather heating up again this week, he said it was important people be mindful of fires and remember the region is still subject to the fire danger period, during which no open-air fires can be lit without a permit.
