Mr Coghlan was appointed because of his involvement with the community and fundraising activities throughout Bendigo.
“Scots Day Out is one of the great days of the year and I am really honoured to have been named chieftain for 2018,” Mr Coghlan said.
“The sea of tartan in Rosalind Park and the music from pipe bands and Celtic folk groups stirs the passion and puts smiles on our faces as we enjoy taking part in medieval sword fights, contemporary highland games and sampling Scottish food.”
“I’ve probably got a little more Irish than Scot in the blood but like so many in Bendigo, there’s a connection to Scotland and it’s wonderful how we come together as a community to celebrate Scots Day Out every year.”
Event director Chirs Earl said the Scots Day Out celebrations were moved to March instead of February because of the recurrent hot weather.
“We added more activities this year including the first Glen Lachlann Estate College of Arms tournament as part of Scots Day Out, a Scottish-inspired folk art painting exhibition and more contemporary family activities inspired by the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival,” Mr Earl said.
Scots Day Out celebrations will take place on Saturday March 3 and will begin with a march of bands, dancers and clans down View St from 10 am and then follow with festivities in Rosalind Park.
