THE Keck-Findlay one-day Shield isn’t a new initiative for the Bendigo District Cricket Association, but the way in which it will be decided on Friday is.

The BDCA has been awarding the Keck-Findlay Shield to the best-performed team in the one-day rounds since the 2008-09 season, with it having been won five times by Strathdale-Maristians.
However, this season the BDCA has introduced a day-night one-day final to be contested on Australia Day between Bendigo and Golden Square at the QEO.

Golden Square has twice won the Keck-Findlay Shield – named after Doug Keck and Barry Findlay – and captain Ben Gunn says the club is looking forward to the opportunity to capture some silverware in its centenary season.
“Being such a big year for the club, we’ve really set our sights on achieving success and the chance to walk away with the one-day premiership would be fantastic,” Gunn said on Thursday.
Only two of the four scheduled one-day rounds were completed, with Golden Square defeating White Hills (44 runs) and Strathfieldsaye (seven wickets), while Bendigo beat Huntly-North Epsom (four wickets) and White Hills (two wickets).
Non-scheduled one-day matches were also played last Sunday, but didn’t contribute to the Keck-Findlay standings. Golden Square defeated Huntly-North Epsom by six wickets and Bendigo beat Eaglehawk by one run.
For Bendigo, opportunities to vie for trophies have been rare over the past two decades, with the club’s only success at the top level since 1994 a Twenty20 title in 2015.
“We’re really focused on the fact that this is a final, and although it’s not the main stage, it’s silverware on the line and an opportunity play in a finals environment on the QEO,” Bendigo skipper Shane Koop said.
“Last week’s win over Eaglehawk in a tight situation certainly gives us plenty of confidence to take into Friday.”
Friday’s Keck-Findlay Shield final starts at 2.30pm.
