The forecast for Australia Day is for 38 degrees with the mercury climbing to 39 on Saturday and 41 on Sunday.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster John Turnbull said it would be significantly cooler early next week.
“Monday drops back to 32 degrees and Tuesday is set to be 24. That cold front will come through but it takes a while for the cold air to push behind the front,” he said.
“The last cool change only affected southern Victoria, it didn’t push past the ranges.
“There will also be some possible showers on Sunday but more likely on Monday with some chance of storms.”
Local sport organisations will watch forecasts on Friday before making a decision to alter, postpone or cancel competitions.
Some community events have been postponed. The annual Axedale Quick Shear and Family Fun Day and the Eaglehawk Market were scheduled for this weekend but will now both be held on Saturday, February 24.
