If the temperature gets that high, it will be the third day in a row the city has sweltered through a 40-degree or above day.
On Saturday, the mercury hit 42.3 degrees at 2.09pm, while on Friday, it rose to 43.5 degrees in the late afternoon.
On Thursday, Bendigo fell just shy of the 40-degree mark, reaching 39.6 degrees.
Heat health alerts have been issued for much of the region today, advising people to stay well-hydrated, never leave children, pets or people in cars, keep cool and plan ahead.
The Bendigo region has a history of facing a string of 40-degree days. Bendigo had four days above 42 in 2014 (January 14-17), three days above 40 in 2010 (January 9-11) and four days above 42 in 2009 (January 28-31).
Elsewhere in central Victoria, Redesdale is headed for a top of 39 degrees; Castlemaine 37; Kyneton 35 degrees; 37 degrees in Maryborough; 43 degrees in Echuca and Kerang; 42 in Birchip; and 44 in Swan Hill.
Today’s fire danger rating is set to very high in the northern country, north central and Wimmera, and severe in the Mallee.
Yesterday fire crews battled a blaze just north of Daylesford which burnt about 250 hectares of farmland at Smeaton. Advice warnings still remain in place.
