We filmed this at the corner of Allies and Hermitage roads where the road is so soft you can leave a hand imprint on it.

According to VicRoads, it’s not unusual for hot weather to result in some “bleeding of the road surface”, where it becomes soft and sticky.

It’s more likely to occur on recently sealed roads, and the organisation says it’s unavoidable in extreme heat. 

EARLIER: Events have been cancelled and heat health alerts have been issued as Bendigo swelters through its second day in a row above 40 degrees.

The mercury nudged over 40 degrees by lunchtime today with the temperature reaching 40.6 degrees at 1.30pm.

It follows a scorcher of a day yesterday, where the temperature exceeded 43 degrees in Bendigo, hitting 43.5 degrees.

But there was little relief overnight, with Bendigonians dealing with temperatures above 30 degrees at midnight still, and a low of 22.2 degrees at 7am.

Today, some trains are being replaced by coaches on Bendigo’s V/Line network as heat speed restrictions come into force.

The Department of Health and Human Services has issued heat health alerts for most of central Victoria today, urging people take care.

Both the Bendigo District and Emu Valley cricket associations have called off games today as the mercury rises.

The Moonlight Market in Hargreaves Mall has also been called off, as has the Summer in the Parks outdoor movie Despicable Me 3 scheduled for Marong’s Malone Park.

Friday was the hottest day since January 14, 2014, where Bendigo reached a top temperature of 43.8 degrees.

On Thursday, Bendigo fell just shy of the 40-degree mark, reaching 39.6 degrees.
