Wangaratta couldn’t have been more impressive in defeating Maryborough at the QEO on day one.
Maryborough won the toss and batted, but was restricted to a total of 167 by the disciplined Wangaratta attack.
Liam Radlof (56 not out) and Jayden Templeton (51) were the only Maryborough batsmen to fire.
Opening bowler Mark Butters was superb for Wangaratta, finishing with 3-24 off 11.3 overs. Richard Worcester (3-50) and Joe Thomas (2-20 off 12 overs) gave him great support.
In reply, Wangaratta cruised to 4-223 off 50 overs.
Top three batsmen Luke Whitten (30), Reid Clarke (39) and Matt Casey (59 not out) set the foundation before Tom Nightingale cashed in with 71 off as many balls.
Sydney Ray and Josh Atwell took nine wickets between them to lead Portland to a day one win over Grassmere at Wade Street.
Ray claimed 5-46 and Atwelll 4-18 as Portland bowled Grassmere out for just 129 – 55 runs short of Portland’s total of 184.
Steve Blacker (49) was best with the bat for Grassmere.
Earlier, Portland’s Jake Wilson (70) and Mark Pitt (58) added 126 for the first wicket before Braden Hotker (4-42) bowled Grassmere back into the game.
In the final division two game of day one, Colac (224) defeated Red Cliffs by (8-164) by 60 runs. All five of Colac’s top-order scored more than 20 led by Dylan Flanigan with 55. Noah Lanigan (5-54) cleaned up the Colac tail.
Despite a fine 56 from Shannon Bowen, Red Cliffs’ never really looked like chasing down the total. Bryce McDonald (4-40) was the pick of the Colac bowlers.
The highlight of division three was Mitch Winter-Irving's unbeaten 200 for BDCA Colts against Upper Loddon at White Hills. The White Hills’ skipper hit 25 fours and five sixes as the BDCA Colts posted 3-395 off 50 overs.
Winter-Irving didn’t start his innings until the 16th over after the fall of opener Linc Jacobs for 43. Six of his first 14 scoring shots were boundaries and he dominated partnerships of 112 with Ryan Harling (31) and 124 with Jayden Sheean (26). Will Collicoat (41 not out) batted well in the latter overs.
In reply, Upper Loddon was bowled out for 139, with Mathew Donnelly (62) the mainstay of the innings. Jacobs took 4-18.
Northern United star James Harney fell three runs short of a century in his side's win over Grassmere Colts at North Bendigo. Harney made 97 of Northern United's total of 230. Grassmere fell 61 runs short after being bowled out for 169.
In other division three games, Colac Colts (83 and 4-71) defeated Wimmera-Mallee (71) in a low-scoring clash at Eaglehawk, while Grampians Colts 7-242 proved too good for Swan Hill (148).
