Blue-green algae can be toxic to animals, potentially causing nausea, vomiting and disorientation if affected water is swallowed.
City of Greater Bendigo safe and healthy environments manager Caroline Grylls said people should exercise caution around water at the park.
“Pet owners are encouraged to continue to exercise and socialise their dogs at the park but be vigilant in preventing them from entering or drinking the water,” Ms Grylls said.
The council will continue to monitor the water and has placed warning signs in the park.
People and animals that come into contact with the water should wash their skin immediately in clean water.
If your dog displays signs or symptoms of illness, keep an eye on them and seek advice from a veterinarian immediately.
Blue-green algae can be present when there are no obvious signs, so visual inspection cannot be relied upon when assessing if water is safe.
It is not known how long the algae will remain in the water.
