The Castlemaine troupe will present Next to Normal in April.
Next to Normal is a 2009 musical that follows a suburban family as they cope with crisis and mental illness. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards.
It also won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, becoming only the eighth musical in history to receive the honor
Matt Sheehan will direct the production will be held in the Old Castlemaine Gaol.
“We try to represent the breadth of musicals and show the different genres when picking a show,” Sheehan said.
“Normally the shows we picked have some sort of message we feel is important to get across and we try to alternate between light-hearted and more dramatic things.
“Next to Normal has got that sort of rock sensibility and contemporary music but at the same time that type musical theatre way of telling stories. It is an intense story.”
It is their first production for two years. Three’s a Crowd’s last show was ensemble musical Assassins in 2016.
In the past they have also performed Avenue Q (2014), the 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee (2010) and Little Shop of Horrors (2009).
Auditions are on January 13. Head to www.3ac.com.au for details or to book an audition.
