The 39-year-old was arrested by police at the scene following the crash, which left one man dead and two seriously injured.
One of the injured men was airlifted to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, where he is in a stable condition.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said investigators were looking into typical factors involved in crashes, such as speed, drugs and alcohol.
Detective Sergeant Amos said investigators planned to return to Castlemaine this week to interview the driver.
UPDATE Sunday 10am: The person killed in yesterday afternoon’s crash in Castlemaine has been identified as a 37-year-old local man.
He was killed instantly when the vehicle he was travelling in crashed into a pole at the intersection of Forest and Urquhart streets about 3.45pm.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives remain in Castlemaine today.
Two other men, both aged in their 30s, suffered serious injuries in the crash.
One was to be airlifted to a Melbourne hospital, while the other was to be transported to Bendigo Health.
Police arrested the 39-year-old driver at the scene.
UPDATE 6.30pm: Police have confirmed a person died in this afternoon’s crash in Castlemaine.
Police say the rear seat passenger of the car was killed instantly when the car hit a pole.
The person has not been identified.

A man died in a crash in Wandong, near Kilmore, after his car hit a tree shortly after 1.30pm.
Another man is fighting for life following a crash on the Ballarat-Daylesford Road at Clarkes Hill this afternoon.
It is understood the man’s car rolled when he swerved to avoid a tree branch.

UPDATE 5.20pm: A man in his 30s will be airlifted to a Melbourne hospital after a crash in Castlemaine on Saturday afternoon.
The man is in a serious condition with hip and pelvic injuries.
Another man in his 30s will be taken by road ambulance to Bendigo Health.
He has leg injuries and is in a serious but stable condition.

EARLIER: Three people have been injured and at least one might be airlifted to Melbourne after a car crashed into a power pole in Castlemaine on Saturday afternoon.
Emergency services received the call to the crash on Forest Street, between Barker and Frederick streets, at 3.46pm.
A man in his 50s and a man in his 40s have suffered leg injuries, while a man in his 50s has arm and back injuries.
It is understood a fourth occupant of the vehicle is uninjured.
Paramedics remain at the scene assessing the patients to determine who, if anyone, will need to be transported to Melbourne.
